Hi folks!

When I think of Labor Day, I think: long weekend, mattress sales, last weekend of the year to wear white. I'm privileged enough to benefit from a history of labor movements, strikes, labor laws, and safety standards, without really having had to fight for them myself. And if I'm honest, I've probably learned, and retained, as much about American labor history from movies as I did in any history class.

I'm carrying that into this Labor Day, with a real desire to better appreciate what workers fought for in the past, and understand how it still shapes work today. The movies below are not ones showing in Boulder today (I know, a bit of a departure), but felt worth shouting out for today's holiday.

With that in mind, here are some of my favorite films about labor and unions in the US:
• Blue Collar (1978) Three Detroit auto workers rob their own union's safe and find the ledger proving it: the union is loan-sharking members and is just as rotten as management.
• 9 to 5 (1980) Three secretaries, done with their sexist boss, kidnap him and quietly run the office better: job sharing, on-site daycare, flexible hours.
• Sorry to Bother You (2018) A Black telemarketer discovers his "white voice" gets him promoted right as his coworkers start organizing a union.
• Two Days, One Night (2014) Sandra has one weekend to convince sixteen coworkers to give up their bonus so she can keep her job, one conversation at a time. It's a touching story about community and solidarity.

And some that are on my watch list:
• Salt of the Earth (1954) Based on a real strike against the Empire Zinc Company in Grant County, New Mexico. When an injunction bars the miners from picketing, their wives take the line instead.
• Harlan County, USA (1976) A documentary covering the 1973 "Brookside Strike," in which 180 coal miners and their wives struck against the Eastover Coal Company plant in Harlan County, southeast Kentucky.

Akira's back in theatres, and this time, in 4K! In 2019, Neo-Tokyo has been rebuilt on the ashes of old Tokyo, destroyed decades earlier by a mysterious explosion the government blamed on a bomb. It was actually a child psychic named Akira. This is a classic cyberpunk anime that's had a massive impact on pop culture worldwide since its 1988 release.
